Welcome to our latest and we hope, greatest recording project so far, of which we feel justifiably proud. This, our fourth CD was financed, recorded, produced and packaged entirely by members of the group. More significantly, it contains some great new originals four new songs by Steve Gidora and a sizzlin' hot new Cajun tune by Victor Smith. Also on board is a Canadian favourite, Blue Rodeo's classic 5 Days in May.
Of course, our usual roster of high-energy trad tunes are there too, from the Celtic traditions of Ireland, Scotland and Quebec plus an old Yiddish musical chestnut that we love. (Listen! Enjoy! Later we'll discuss business!) Click on any highlighted song titles below to hear a sample clip in Quicktime MP3 format. "But wait, there's more!" an old friend from our first CD, Ellen O'Grady, is back again on this one: on studio track 3 below, and live in concert as a QuickTime video. Sneak a peek at her on our Concert Movies page!
"Live or on disc, The Wheat in the Barley is an altogether superior ensemble. Folk, world, jazz, a little funk, reggae and Cajun, all co-exist peacefully and passionately on their latest CD, Cant Draw The Curtain. There are few bands that can move from a traditional Celtic tune to a Yiddish theatre gem, to a Blue Rodeo cover, to more-than-solid originals. These folks can. With one foot in the tradition and the other somewhere in the future, The Wheat In The Barley keeps getting better and better. This is music to make you exercise your feet and your brain!" Gary Cristall, Artistic Director (1978 1994), Vancouver Folk Music Festival
